What it is

  • Git
  • CI/CD
  • DevOps
  • Teams

GitLab Community Edition is a platform for development teams: repositories, merge requests, issues, wikis, built-in CI/CD and a container registry.

Your own GitLab keeps code and pipelines inside your infrastructure, with no limits on CI minutes or private projects.

GitLab is resource-hungry: its developers name 8 vCPU and 16 GB RAM as the baseline for a single server, and 8 GB as the minimum.

  • Repositories and merge requests with review
  • Built-in CI/CD (GitLab Runner)
  • Container and package registry
  • Issues, boards and wikis
  • Groups and access permissions

Recommended plan

For GitLab CE: at least 8 vCPU, 16 GB RAM and 225 GB NVMe.

Minimum to run
4 vCPU · 8 GB RAM · 40 GB disk
Systems
Ubuntu 22.04 · Ubuntu 24.04 · Debian 11 · Debian 12

How to install

Three steps in the bot or one command over SSH; installation takes about 15 minutes.

  1. 01

Choose a plan in the bot

Open @ExpressHost_bot and pay for a VPS. The server will be ready in about 60 seconds.

  2. 02

    Add GitLab CE

At the “Add-ons” step pick the script from the library, or run it later: Server settings → Scripts.

  3. 03

Open http://server-IP and log in as root

The bot will send the server address and login details to the chat.

Manually over SSH

Connect to the server as root and run the command. Supported systems: Ubuntu 22.04, Ubuntu 24.04, Debian 11, Debian 12.

Install command
sudo apt install -y curl && curl --location "https://packages.gitlab.com/install/repositories/gitlab/gitlab-ce/script.deb.sh" | sudo bash && sudo EXTERNAL_URL="http://$(hostname -I | awk '{print $1}')" apt install -y gitlab-ce

GitLab CE FAQ

Didn’t find an answer? Message @ExpressHost_SupportBot.

Why such a large plan?

GitLab runs dozens of processes: PostgreSQL, Redis, Puma, Sidekiq. The documentation requires at least 8 GB of memory; the baseline configuration is 8 vCPU and 16 GB.

Need something lighter?

For a small team, go with Gitea: it runs even on 1 vCPU and 2 GB.

How do I update GitLab?

apt update && apt install gitlab-ce. For major versions, follow the upgrade path from the GitLab documentation.

GitLab CE installs at checkout — in the bot.
