Prices are taken from the providers' pricing pages on the check date, per month, without prepayment discounts; rubles and euros are converted to US dollars at the official rate (Central Bank of Russia and ECB respectively). Our price is the step from the list above, with the server in the Netherlands. Resources don't match one to one: where another provider gives more of a resource, the row says so. Providers change their prices; the current price is on their site, linked in each row.

Why these resources

Minimums come from the apps' official requirements; our estimates are marked.

  1. 01Redis cache1 vCPU · 1 GB · 10 GB · estimate

Redis keeps all data in memory and needs spare memory to save a snapshot under write load. So 1 GB fits a cache of about 0.5 GB of data.

  2. 02Pet project database1 vCPU · 2 GB · 20 GB · estimate

PostgreSQL suggests about 25% of memory for shared_buffers, here 512 MB; the rest goes to the OS cache. Disk is about twice the data size: indexes, logs and dumps.

  3. 03Website or CRM database2 vCPU · 4 GB · 50 GB

MongoDB's WiredTiger cache is 50% of (RAM − 1 GB), which is 1.5 GB on 4 GB. PostgreSQL's shared_buffers on the same 4 GB is 1 GB.

  4. 04Production database4 vCPU · 8 GB · 100 GB · estimate

2 GB of shared_buffers, about 6 GB for the OS cache and dozens of connections.

  5. 05Database under load8 vCPU · 16 GB · 200 GB · estimate

Our estimate for parallel queries and indexes that don't fit into 8 GB.

  6. 06In-memory analytics8 vCPU · 32 GB · 300 GB · estimate

The whole MongoDB or Redis working set in memory. There is no ready plan with 32 GB and 300 GB cheaper than one with 16 vCPU; a configuration gives the memory without extra cores.

Databases FAQ

No answer here? Message @ExpressHost_SupportBot.

How much memory does a database need?

The main rule: hot data should fit in memory. PostgreSQL suggests giving about 25% of RAM to shared_buffers; MongoDB's WiredTiger cache takes 50% of (RAM − 1 GB). On the “Website or CRM database” plan (2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 50 GB NVMe) that's 1 GB and 1.5 GB.

How is a database on a VPS different from a managed database?

It's your server with root access: you choose the DBMS and version yourself and handle the config, updates and backups. You pay only for resources: 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 50 GB NVMe costs $8.35 a month.

How do I block access to the database from the internet?

Have the database listen on localhost only and close its port in the firewall, which is configured right in the bot. Connect from your computer through an SSH tunnel.

How much disk should I plan for?

We count about twice the data size: indexes, logs, VACUUM and dumps all take space. For a 20 GB database that's the “Website or CRM database” plan with 50 GB NVMe. That's our estimate.
